An Apple a Day…But Vinegar?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away…right? Well, this is one way an apple may keep you from the doctor forever. If you’re lucky. Apple cider vinegar has more claims to cures than Carter has liver pills. But this one’s all natural and it’s been around almost forever.

Dr. Kahn, my metabolic cardiologist, suggested I might like to try drinking a half ounce of apple cider vinegar twice a day. My blood tests revealed some of my cholesterol levels were higher than normal, my blood sugar was heading in the wrong direction and I have been complaining about weight gain and bloating. He felt that this one natural remedy might help with all three.

I was curious, I had heard that apple cider vinegar was good for you, but I didn’t think it pertained to me.  Well, think again…it’s just what the doctor ordered. His “prescription” was for an organic, non-distilled apple cider vinegar.  The one most people are familiar with is Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar.  You want to get the one that’s kind of cloudy and has a little color to it. The “mother” is the fermented sediment that you will see in the bottle…that’s what you want. That’s the good stuff.

Vinegar translates to vin aigre, which is french for “sour wine.” Apple cider vinegar’s medicinal benefits were discovered around 5000 BC, but it was used for other purposes before then.  It was aboard Columbus’ ship, to prevent scurvy, and was used for this reason as well during the Civil War.

Apple cider vinegar has been used as an herbal remedy for centuries for many ailments, it’s full of minerals, vitamins and amino acids. I was amazed at all the uses for apple cider vinegar today and you will be too!

One Teen Creates a Cure for Hiccups

But one cure that’s not on the list is hiccups.  Yes, you heard me right…hiccups. “Mother is necessity of invention” holds true, especially when you’ve had the hiccups for weeks. Which is what happened to one teen in Connecticut.

lollipopsIn 2010, a 13 year old girl from Connecticut, Mallory Kievman, invented a “hiccupop”. It’s a lollipop that cures hiccups, made with…you guessed it….apple cider vinegar.  “It triggers a set of nerves in your throat and mouth that are responsible for the hiccup reflex arc,” said Mallory with a matter-of-fact tone. “It basically over-stimulates those nerves and cancels out the message to hiccup.” [5]

Mallory is a successful entrepreneur and you can find out more about her by visiting her website, Hiccupops.

There are plenty of reasons to keep apple cider vinegar in your kitchen, and it’s not only for cooking. It was good enough for grandma, then it’s just what the doctor ordered. The remedies that grandma used are probably the healthiest ways too.
