Shirley Tranquill

Shirley Tranquill is my yoga coach at the Bestie Hosick Fitness Center in Frankfort, Michigan.  I’m fortunate to have someone who has the experience, the patience and the dedication to helping others. I feel so grateful to join her and others for an hour, twice a week, to enhance the quality of my life through yoga.

Shirley previously was a North Carolina volunteer assistant gymnastics coach. Tranquill brought the Tar Heels over 30 years experience as a coach, choreographer and judge for women’s gymnastics. With this vast experience and knowledge, her efforts with the team have been focused on developing creative and unique elements on both balance beam and floor exercise.

Before coming to Carolina, Tranquill was the coach of Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton from 1979 to 1982. From 1984 to 1986, she was the head coach for Women’s Gymnastics at the United States Naval Academy, and later was the volunteer assistant coach at Michigan State University from 1996 to 1999.

Tranquill is the co-author of the USGF Dance Workouts for the national gymnastics federation and the co-author of the film “Choreography.” Furthermore, she has provided choreography for many elite gymnasts including Mary Lou Retton, Alexis Brion, Katy McFarland, Cori Fritzinger, Nicki Butler, Marcia Newby, and Randi Stageberg. She holds a national ranking as a USA Brevet Judge.

Shirley Tranquill earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Wittenberg University and received a Masters of Science in Physical Education and Dance from Bowling Green State. Tranquill is married to Gary Tranquill, who served as North Carolina’s offensive coordinator for football from 2001-05. They have 7 grandchildren.
